By dispatching more than 10 million eggs as early as week 47, Aqua Gen has demonstrated an all time early start of the egg season. By giving the brood fish different photoperiod- and temperature regimes, Aqua Gen has achieved a high degree of flexibility in production of salmon eggs. This makes it possible to deliver eggs early to customers who want to produce 0+ smolts early in the autumn without accelerating growth rate by means of high water temperature, which is harmful for the fish. Aqua Gen will also expand the season in the other end by producing eggs for late hatch. Increasing the window for delivery of eyed eggs, increases the flexibility and cost efficiency in smolt production and the grow-out phase.

The brood fish used for this year’s egg production represents 8th generation in Aqua Gen’s pedigree breeding program. Aqua Gen’s basis is the broad breeding goal in the breeding nucleus, securing genetic control of 12 traits with importance for production efficiency, product quality and animal welfare. During the three last generations, Aqua Gen, as the first salmon breeding company, has employed methods making it possible to identify families with increased genetic resistance to infectious diseases. During this year’s selection of brood fish special emphasis has been put on low susceptibility to virus diseases, having caused big losses for the salmon industry. Our aim is to bring forth a more robust fish with a higher degree of stress tolerance and resistance to loss-making diseases, without losing what we already have achieved with regards to growth rate and quality traits.Eyed eggs from Aqua Gen are produced in our own farms in Hemne and Sunndalsøra, and our collaborating egg producers: ST Stamfisk, Aakvik Settefisk and Fjord Seafood Svanøy.
