Aqua Gen operates a large-scale selective breeding program with systematic measurement of 22 traits in Atlantic salmon and 12 traits in rainbow trout.  By measuring and keeping control over many important traits, we get a good basis for section for maximal selective breeding progress and a minimal degree of inbreeding.

Traits which are measured are categorized as effective and robust. Effective traits are of a production-technical and qualitative character and robust traits are of a health and animal welfare character.

Traits in the table below are measured and supervised in the selective breeding programs for Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout. The point of keeping control of many traits is to hinder inbreeding and secure that the progress in one characteristic does not case regression in another characteristic.

By the selection of breeding fish for the next generation, a few traits are weighted in relation to desired priority. If a client wants a fish which is especially resistant to disease, breeding fish which are strong in these characteristics are chosen
