New appointment in Aqua GenThomas Moen (37) is employed as a Research Scientist in Aqua Gen from August 1. 2008. Thomas has a Master in biochemistry from The University of Oslo. He has worked with AKVAFORSK (now Nofima) for eight years where he took his PhD on genetic resistance to ISA in Atlantic salmon. As opposed to the other geneticists in Aqua Gen, who are specialized in quantitative genetics, Thomas is a molecular geneticist. He has been the project leader for the research project "Marker-assisted selection for IPN-resistance in Atlantic salmon", that was terminated July 1. 2008. In this project a genetic marker that explains the major part of the genetic variation in resistance to IPN was identified. It is important to have Thomas in the team when these very important findings are to be implemented in the breeding work. We also need an in-house molecular geneticist for a number of other reasons. Among other things he will be the project leader of a new research project we have in collaboration with UMB/CIGENE in Ås, Norway. |
